About 14 years ago, my sister and I had a heart-to-heart talk with our father about moving to a retirement community. That was the seed for More Than Moving for Seniors (www.MoreThanMoving.com) and Susan’s Selections (www.SusansSelections.com).

I’m Susan Campbell and with my husband, Roy Lambertson, and our staff, we help older adults and their families with the sometimes overwhelming task of sorting through and moving from a family home. We face the equally daunting task of what do with the stuff no one wants or needs.

Moving is challenging at any age. When my father moved from his home, he had lived there 44 years. The family had saved everything from grade school report cards to tools from my grandfather to vintage clothing to who knows what else. I was the “designated daughter” – the adult child who is most involved in helping an aging parent with the complex process of moving and dismantling the home. I learned many lessons.

I realized that other people needed help with the same process. More Than Moving was created. Every year, we help hundreds of clients move, sell their belongings, and get settled in their new homes. Our clients usually tell us “we couldn’t have done without you.”

More Than Moving helps with every step in the process to make the move as easy as possible. Most older adults haven’t moved in many years but we move every day. Some of our services include:

De-cluttering & sorting the many years of accumulation

Packing & unpacking the precious treasured to be moved

Moving locally and in the state of Virginia

Coordinating long-distance moves

Setting up the new home so it feels like home right away

Estate and moving sales in the home to make money on what you don’t need

Consignment sales in our store for a smaller amount of items

Clearing out houses and leaving them broom clean

Because we offer a wide variety of services, our clients often say that we are “more than moving.” We are proud to live up to our name!

Moving lives, not boxes.

-Susan Campbell

We’re gearing up for our Light the Night Walk on October 22nd for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! This annual fundraising walk is to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer.

LLS funded advances are helping patients beyond those for whom they were originally developed, including people with solid tumors and auto-immune diseases. In the past decade, nearly 50% (19 out of 39) of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA were approved as treatment for patients with blood cancer. Twelve are already approved for people beyond those whom they were first developed. With your help, we are saving lives.

Please join our team effort today by making a small donation of $5, $10, $20, or even more. Every donation will help us reach our goal of $1,000. Your participation in the Light the Night Walk will help save lives.

We wanted you to meet a friend of ours that is a blood cancer survivor, Mindy Fast. Mindy (in the purple) is visiting our office next week to share her story with our team, the NET 30 Calculators. We hope to share that story with you in our October NET 30 News.

Be sure to check our team website frequently to see our progress and thank you for your support.

I had an eventful week last week! We were up every morning around 5:30 a.m. to begin the arduous task of attic diving at our home. We were preparing for the new heating system to be put in. OH MY GOSH!

I cannot believe the treasures we have uncovered. My husband’s baby clothes, a few selected baby clothes from our two children. Various bed frames, chairs with no seats, books, canning jars, weights, a broken handle bar tricycle, window screens for windows we have replaced, and our son’s VMI hay(his rolled up mattress circa 1989). The list goes on and on.

I challenge you to get your attic in order before it falls in on you. Susan said, “if it is in the attic you should have stopped by the garbage can to throw it away before it makes it to the attic”. Great advice, but I have too much Scotch-Irish in me to do that. You know the old adage “Waste not want not”.

Addison Clark Online was started three years ago with the philosophy of bringing “big business” experience to small and medium sized companies. Our first tagline – Global Perspective, Local Approach – reflected that mission. My business partner, Andrew Rountree, and I spent our careers with various Fortune 500 companies, learning the ropes in corporate America. After many years (Andrew is much older than I am…) with large companies we started getting restless. Our entrepreneurial spirits were not getting fed. While I would not trade that time for anything due to how much I learned about the real world, and more specifically the world of consumer marketing, it was time to do something new.

It was on a business trip to Chicago that Addison Clark Online was born. We often get asked where the company name came from. Or, which one of you is ‘Addison’ and which is ‘Clark’? Actually, as two lifelong Chicago Cubs fans we made sure on our trip to catch a Cubbies game at iconic Wrigley Field. While sitting in the left field bleachers we decided to start our new company. Wrigley Field happens to stand at the corner of Addison and Clark Streets. We had our name.

Our company has evolved a lot over the years, but the core mission of helping businesses refine their marketing strategies (especially in the online space) to generate business results has remained constant. We have built an incredible list of clients, and we are so happy to work with each and every one.

The one thing we underestimated as we launched and began to grow the business was the importance of having strategic partnerships with other companies. You’ve heard the expression “no man is an island”? Well, no company can be successful in a vacuum. We met Andrea Lilly early on in a networking group, and we hit it off immediately. She explained to us the benefits of working with a bookkeeping company, but like many start-ups we were hesitant to spend the money.

We made the leap in 2009, and have been working with NET 30 ever since. What a great company. I am amazed that we kept up with things for so long, but our business is so much more efficient with the help of the NET 30 gang! From staying on top of billing to the new and welcomed transparency we have regarding our company’s financials, NET 30 has done wonderful things for our business. We look forward to continuing our partnership with NET 30 as we continue to grow and evolve our business.

Since Gary Meza is our focused client this month, I wanted to share an interview with NET 30’s owner, Herbert W. Goodall, III. Here are a few of his comments on why NET 30 is especially advantageous for busy physicians, small businesses and non-profits.

Q. NET 30 has a number of medical clients. Can you tell us why it makes sense for busy physicians to use your services?

A. Yes, here are three good reasons:

Physicians understand that their time is money.

Physicians know that outsourcing their bookkeeping to someone who can handle the job efficiently is more cost-effective than having someone in-house attempt to do something they are not qualified for, or simply do not have the time to do in addition to their other duties.

We want physicians to do what they do best, which is taking care of patients.

Our service lets all professional concentrate on applying their skills to grow their businesses while NET 30 provides the bookkeeping service. Because of our success, we have a strong referral channel.

Q. What inspired you to start this business?

A. I was looking for someone to handle my personal bills other than my secretary

Q. What makes your company unique in the marketplace?

A. People, our employees who are long-timers. We interact with our clients and stress personal service. A person answers the phone, not a machine. We have had good luck retaining clients, some of whom have been with us since the start of NET 30.

Q. What kind of trends are you seeing in your industry?

A. We see smaller organizations outsourcing more functions. We believe that the business/practitioner/nonprofit should concentrate on managing and achieving their core objectives. It’s probably not very productive to spend precious time on bookkeeping that can be outsourced economically to us.

Many professionals consider NET 30 to be their “bookkeeping staff.” Here are just a few comments from our clients:

“NET 30 has been very helpful. By outsourcing my payables, receivables and payroll (at a very small cost!) it allows me to focus on what I need to do and frees up my staff from those tasks. I would recommend them without hesitation.” Dr. John Zinsser of Zinsser Plastic Surgery, P.C. NET 30 Client since 2005

“NET 30 has been instrumental in helping us achieve our success because they support us with our bookkeeping needs so that we can focus our time on the business. We appreciate their trust and continued support.”

Genevieve Roberts, Partner, Titan Group, NET 30 Client since 2005

“I have enjoyed our bookkeeping relationship with NET 30 since 2007. My wife is a CPA and is quite impressed with the high level of bookkeeping proficiency and customer service NET 30 provides our practice. We are proud to be one of their clients and look forward to them being around for many years to come.”

Dr. Mitchell Waskin, M.D. Foot & Ankle Center, LLC, NET 30 Client since 2007

“As a nonprofit organization we did not think that our finances could be managed by a company like NET 30. Surely with all the grants and restricted funds and staff sharing it was way more than what they could handle. We were sure we needed to have a part-time bookkeeper on staff and it was with great skepticism that I met with them to discuss our needs. I quickly realized that our problems were not beyond their ability.”

Kate W. Hanger, Director of Programs, Virginia Dental Association Foundation, Client since 2011

Raving Fans is an interesting book written by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles in 1993. Even though this book is a bit dated, it conveys an important message that’s still true today.

“Your customers are only satisfied because their expectations are so low and because no one else is doing better. Just having satisfied customers isn’t good enough anymore. If you really want a booming business, you have to create Raving Fans.”

Well that certainly caught my eye. This book is written as a parable and the 138 pages are a quick read. There is a Fairy Godmother, whose name is Charlie, and a newly appointed Area Manager, who knew there had been three previous Area Managers in this position before he got this job. They had been told, just like him: “Remember this company was built on customer service. If those others had understood, they would still be here.”

Charlie, the fairy godmother, escorts the new Area Manager on a journey to visit fictional companies, which have created an environment of delivering awesome customer service. Their phenomenal success is based on three simple principles … Decide what you want, Discover what the customer wants, and Deliver the vision plus one percent. The story teaches the intricacies of each principle, illustrated in a variety of scenarios.

The success of our business requires that we have raving fans, and the concepts in the story define how you can establish a company that creates these raving fans.

Charlie takes the Area Manager to several companies to teach these three concepts: Decide, Discover and Deliver. Each visit offers nuggets of common sense, startling new tips and innovative techniques that can be implemented in any company that seeks the benefits of raving fans … clients who tell others how wonderful you are.

The last stop for the Area Manager and Charlie is to a service station owned by a well-known basketball player. The service station offers full service, like the ones we have not seen since the 50’s. Staff greeting you, pumping gas, calling you by name, checking all the fluid under the hood, topping off the fluids you need, washing your windshield, and giving you a new trash bag for your car. It reminds me of the CarMax car commercial where the guys thinks they are trying to hijack his car!

People need to feel they belong to the group, the service center. They need to feel they’re important and that what they do, think and say truly matters. What they are doing is giving their customers a symbolic hug. Learn to take care of your clients so they will want to share their experience with others. Create those magic moments the book calls “giving symbolic hugs.”

At NET 30, this is one of primary goals to have Raving Fans as clients. To read what our Raving Fans are saying about NET 30 click here.

IRS DELAYS MANDATORY W-2 HEALTH COST COVERAGE REPORTING AND ISSUES 2011 DRAFT FORM W-2
On Oct. 12, 2010, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) published Notice 2010-69, providing interim relief to employers by initiating a one-year delay of the new requirement that employers report the cost of coverage under an employer-sponsored group health plan on Form W-2. The notice makes the new reporting requirement optional for employers in 2011.

Under the new reporting and disclosure requirements created by this year’s health reform legislation, employers were previously required to include the value of employer-provided coverage on their forms. The IRS indicated that the delay was prompted in an effort to give employers additional time to update payroll systems and administrative procedures in preparation for compliance with the new reporting requirement. The IRS also emphasized that the W-2 reporting requirement is for informational purposes only, and that the amounts reported on the forms will not be taxable.

Although relieved from the reporting requirement in 2011, employers should be ready to report an employee’s employer-sponsored coverage for 2012 on the W-2 statements issued in Jan. 2013. Simultaneous with the announcement, the IRS issued draft Form W-2 for 2011, which employers use to report wages and employee tax withholding. The draft Form W-2 includes the codes that employers can use to report the cost of coverage under an employer-sponsored group health plan.

Additional guidance on the W-2 health cost coverage reporting requirement is anticipated to be published by the IRS later this year.

“The key to small business success has always been cash flow.
